September 2019 Update

I hope September is off to a good start! There are so many exciting things happening for Indigenous educators, youth and mentors in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). I would like to take September's newsletter to share just a few ways you can get involved!

IndigeSTEAM Update

IndigeSTEAM recently completed our final report from our Mentor's retreat in Banff in April. We are so grateful for all of our sponsors and all the attendees that came and brought their whole selves to the conversation. An extremely important conversation on how better to support Indigenous youth in their educational and career futures in STEM. I am so grateful for the leadership and guidance of Wendy Hutchins in the preparation of the format and important key findings you will find in this report. Please share widely with anyone you know who is working to make more inclusive, and culturally supportive spaces for Indigenous people through K - 12, post-secondary and beyond. We are truly seeking to create a community for all ages.

Our Robotics team is working hard to prepare for their exciting trip to compete at the FIRST Global competition in Dubai. The youth presented to the Rotary Club a few weeks ago at 6:30 in the morning!!! I was so incredibly proud at their courage and willingness to share how important this opportunity is to them.

Our youth and parents also came together at the University of Calgary in the Schulich Engineering Maker Space to cut and prepare tipi templates for paint night and sew ribbon skirts and shirts with LED lighting to showcase at Beakerhead and in Dubai! I am so grateful for the commitment of our parent community.
We held two successful paint nights (thank you to all who came out) and will be hosting a Hollywood Games Night and Silent Auction on October 5 at the Black Swan. Tickets are $25 and we would like to ask if you or your organization would consider donating a silent auction item! One item we are excited to auction off is a #55 Hanifin signed Flames jersey!

We are also selling raffle tickets at $10 per ticket with a chance to win every day of October - we can accept etransfers and will send you an ecopy of your raffle ticket. Please email [email protected] for more information!

Finally, we are inviting organizations who would like to be acknowledged on a Global stage to consider sponsoring our Robotics team directly. We would love to work with you to find an opportunity that best fits your sponsorship and community support strategies.

I am excited to share that I will be joining the Board of Directors for the American Indian Science and Engineering Society! I hope you will consider attending their incredible national conference in Milwaukee, WI from October 10 - 12, 2019. www.aises.org I am looking forward to presenting another Indigeneering workshop, this time sharing our learnings at the IndigeSTEAM retreat. I plan to take everything I learn there back to Calgary where I can continue to serve Indigenous youth, students and professionals in STEM. Thank you for being a part of this network. Our next step will be establishing a Professional chapter of AISES here in Alberta that is open to professionals and students to connect. We would love to welcome you to our group!

If you know of incredible things happening in this space, or know a student you think we should spotlight, please get in touch! We will be resuming our student spotlights in October!
