Jasmine McDermott has just finished her second year at the University of Calgary studying Mechanical Engineering. Her dad is German and Cree (Sawridge First Nation), and her mom is Polish and Ukrainian, and she was born in Edmonton and moved to Calgary in 2005. She has demonstrated a commitment to giving back to the Engineering community, initially as a First Year representative and most recently as the Vice President, Academic, of the Engineering Student Society. I was honored to meet Jasmine in my role as Indigenous Engineer in Residence at the University of Calgary, and was not only impressed by her commitment to the engineering community, but her commitment to creating more inclusive spaces for Indigenous STEM students. In addition to her heavy course load, Jasmine is an eager volunteer and participant in many organizations, including spearheading a new Indigenous STEM Student club at the University of Calgary. Her strong connection to her communities guides her passion for equity, diversity and inclusion in engineering, and I am continuously impressed by her willingness to contribute to the conversation around reconciliation in the engineering profession. She is currently preparing to work in Fort McMurray as a summer student, and we cannot wait to reconnect with her in September.
Thank you, Jasmine, for being our Indigeneering Student for May, 2019.
